“Wisdom of the Truth” opens Meadows Museum of Art’s fall exhibition schedule

SHREVEPORT, LA — An exhibition featuring the work of Cuban-American artist Cesar Garcia will kick off the fall 2022 exhibition season at Centenary College’s Meadows Museum of Art. Garcia’s Wisdom of the Truth opens August 29 and will be on display at the Museum through December 3. A free exhibition preview event for Wisdom of the Truth and other Fall 2022 exhibitions at the Meadows is scheduled for Friday, August 26, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.

Garcia’s exhibition opening on August 29 includes an artist talk at 6:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Garcia was born in Havana, Cuba, and first experienced art through his uncle, who had studied at the world-renowned San Alejandro Academy of the Arts in Havana. After moving to the United States, Garcia developed his own distinctive surrealist style that focuses on the interpretation of forms, inner language, and symbols.

Garcia’s work can be found in various public collections including the National Museum of Catholic Art and History in New York City; Housatonic Museum of Art in Bridgeport, Connecticut; University of Miami (Casa Bacardi) Institute for Cuban and Cuban-America Studies; the City of Miami Art Collection; the University of Florida College of Fine Arts; and many other institutions, foundations and recognized collections.

“I am excited to bring Cesar Garcia’s newest works full of splashing colors and chess iconography to the Meadows in Wisdom of the Truth,” said Alissa Klaus, director of the Meadows Museum of Art. “Inspired by his use of chess pieces to depict humanity, a chess board will be set up in the gallery throughout the semester for visitors to interact with and play on if they choose.”

In addition to delivering his artist talk on August 29, Garcia will also visit Assistant Professor of Art Shea Hembrey’s Conceptual Art Studio class.

“We're thrilled to have Cesar join our class as a working artist,” said Hembrey. “Our students will thoughtfully engage with how he uses abstraction, symbolism, and poetry in his own practice while he simultaneously discusses their creative undertakings.”
