RUSTON, La. – Dr. John Lauck, Louisiana Tech University’s Chase Bank Endowed Associate Professor of Accountancy, will offer a free fraud prevention class to area businesses and non-profits on Friday, Nov. 4, from 2-4 p.m. The course will take place in room 126 in the College of Business. “My goal is to equip interested business and nonprofit organizations with skills that will help them prevent, detect, and investigate potential fraud schemes,” said Dr. Lauck, who is a former auditor, CPA, and Certified Fraud Examiner. “I hope this class will provide some actionable strategies to help companies and nonprofits prevent and detect fraud in their organizations.”

The course will provide an overview of the prevalence and types of fraud committed against typical organizations and how and why most frauds occur. In addition, Dr. Lauck will discuss common asset misappropriation and corruption-related fraud schemes impacting organizations.

“I’ve seen that many organizations are unwittingly potential fraud victims,” said Dr. Lauck. “I previously worked in public accounting with numerous small and mid-size businesses and nonprofits, so I know that many of these organizations often lack the training, time, and resources to bolster their fraud defenses, but small improvements can drastically reduce the incidence of fraud as well as the likelihood that fraud may go undetected.”

Dr. Lauck has been a professor in Tech’s School of Accountancy since 2015. His research interests include judgment and decision making in auditing and accounting, particularly as it relates to auditor professional skepticism, auditor detection of fraud and deception in financial reporting, and managerial ethics. His teaching interests include auditing, forensic accounting, and managerial accounting.

Before receiving his Ph.D. in accounting from Virginia Tech, Dr. Lauck worked as an auditor in public accounting, where he specialized in the nonprofit and construction industries. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in accounting from James Madison University and is a Certified Public Accountant in Virginia and Louisiana, and a Certified Fraud Examiner.
